While new growth is necessary for every university, this is the worst area to exploit. Many ecology and biology professors
lead their students into this forest to demonstrate field methods, and theories, such as fire ecology in longleaf pine forests.
If this forest was to be destroyed, in order to demonstrate fire ecology, the professor would have to use a van/bus to transport
students out of the city, which would require gas and other costs.
Many students use the paths in this forest for
recreation, jogging and biking. It is a beautiful, peaceful place, away from the bustle of the centre of campus.
This
forest is one of the last large tracts of longleaf pine forest left in the Wilmington area. It is home to many unique species
of plants and animals, many of which have been designated "species of concern" by the state Wildlife Resources Commission.
What can WE do to prevent this?
