The purpose of this site is to provide information about the Phase 3 construction project at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.  It is slated to begin in April/May of 2008.  The plan is designed to level 15 acres of a long leaf pine ecosystem located across from the Watson School of Education and the new Cultural Arts buildings.  Our goal is to give you the facts about this proposed project.

Check out the files section of the site for related documents and information!

While new growth is necessary for every university, this is the worst area to exploit. Many ecology and biology professors lead their students into this forest to demonstrate field methods, and theories, such as fire ecology in longleaf pine forests. If this forest was to be destroyed, in order to demonstrate fire ecology, the professor would have to use a van/bus to transport students out of the city, which would require gas and other costs.

Many students use the paths in this forest for recreation, jogging and biking. It is a beautiful, peaceful place, away from the bustle of the centre of campus.

This forest is one of the last large tracts of longleaf pine forest left in the Wilmington area. It is home to many unique species of plants and animals, many of which have been designated "species of concern" by the state Wildlife Resources Commission.

What can WE do to prevent this?
